Un-coating for Healthy Cooking

Are you one of those people who love eating so much but really hate washing the dishes? Or are you the type of person who couldn’t sleep knowing that there are tons of dirty plates sitting on your sink waiting to be washed?

Well, personally, if you would make me choose between the two, I would say the former but only if scrubbing very sticky pans is in the scenario. If you know how tiring and irritating cleaning those no-matter-how-hard-you-scrub-those-dirts-it-still-won’t-come-off pans are, I know you would agree.

This reason, I think, is why people (including myself) would prefer non-stick pans over regular ones. Also, cooking using these pans does not require oil or something to grease it. These are what actually make non-stick cookware pretty convenient. And based on experience, convenience is one of the top things people consider in whatever it is that they buy.

However, when I read about these great pans over the Internet, I found out some stuff which I find very alarming. Did you know that non-stick pans are coated with Teflon that is made of polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), which when heated at 600°F and higher releases at least six toxic gases into your homes? These gases are lethal because, when inhaled by your family and even your pets, it can cause organ failure, cancer, and damage to the reproductive organs.

Furthermore, one of the signature ingredients of non-stick cookware is the synthetic chemical Perfluorooctanoic Acid (PFOA), also known as C8, which allows the product to be non-stick, waterproof, and stain-resistant. However, it is highly carcinogenic. Some studies have proven that exposure, even at relatively low levels, to the said chemical can cause stroke, heart and thyroid disease, damage in the bladder, prostate, testicular, and ovarian cancer.

Research shows that individuals exposed to heated Teflon and PFOA containing cookware may also acquire a Polymer Fume Fever or “Teflon Fever” which has flu-like symptoms such as chills, fever, cold, coughs, headaches, and chest pains. So you better watch out for these symptoms!

What’s more alarming is that once the coating is scraped, the chemical-containing surface would start to degrade and could end up in your food, and probably inside your body. Oh my! You better not have scratched your non-stick pan, if you have one!

Realizing just now, this so-called great pan isn’t as great as I thought after all. Even if you say you use and heat your non-stick pan on low fire (somewhere below 600°F), it does not change the fact that it has and may emit dangerous chemicals into your home which, in turn, could greatly affect your and your family’s health.

But you know, as I’ve always been known to be a reliable friend, I wouldn’t leave you all of these shocking information without giving any alternatives. Well, you could use ceramic, cast iron, anodized aluminium, and stainless steel cookware, all of which are safer and environment friendly.

As I always say to my friends, “Don’t be easily fooled by appearances; always look at what’s within.”
