Green Magic

Have you ever dreamed of tasting the ‘elixir of life’? Is it sweet? Is it bitter? Maybe it doesn’t even have a taste. I don’t know for sure but I know one thing, green tea could be one of those so-called elixirs of life.

People often prefer coffee, hot cocoa, soda, or any other drinks which are sweet over green tea because for one, it has a strong slightly bitter and leafy flavour which, to some people, may be not appealing. Plus, its smell makes one feel like a century-old lady. But maybe that’s just me!

However, I used to think that the best things in life don’t always come with pretty packaging. And guess what? Green tea provides at least 11 health benefits which are essential for a good, long life.

One, green tea is a good source of B vitamins, potassium, manganese, magnesium, folate, and caffeine. It is also packed with Polyphenols such as Flavonoids, Catechins, and the most powerful antioxidant Epigallocatechin Gallate (EGCG), all of which are effective for treating and preventing various diseases. These bioactive compounds kill free radicals which often are the cause of different cancers such as breast, prostate, and colorectal cancers. Some studies have also proven that Catechins lower risks for infections as it kills viruses and bacteria, including those ‘little villains’ found in the mouth which cause cavities and tooth decay.

Green tea lowers our blood sugar level and improves insulin sensitivity, thus, lowering the risk for diabetes. According to a study conducted in Japan, the participants who had taken more green tea had a “42% lower risk of developing type II diabetes.” Aside from diabetes, it also prevents cardiovascular diseases by decreasing our triglyceride and cholesterol levels.

Moreover, I may have mentioned earlier that green tea has caffeine which is a stimulant that is known to keep us awake especially during nights where we need to finish school requirements or work. It also contains the amino acid L-theanine which has anti-anxiety effects. The combination of the two is said to not only keep us awake all night long but to also improve our mood, reaction time, memory, and vigilance.

I know it’s a lot to take in but its benefits are not only limited to those. If you are one of those people who dream of losing weight and body fat easily, particularly in the abdominal area, drinking green tea is one way to achieve that. It makes sense because green tea boosts our metabolism.

As green tea has numerous powerful antioxidants, drinking it regularly helps improve our skin condition through flushing out dirt and bacteria, hence, making our skin look fairer and healthier. Plus, it reduces wrinkle formations and other signs of aging.

These are just some of the many benefits green tea could offer. And as a start, you could always try and enjoy this mouth-watering Green Tea, Almond, and Blueberry Smoothie recipe.
