Coca-Cola has been a staple beverage in every celebration I know, be it birthday parties, Christmas, or New Year’s Eve celebrations. And why not? The sizzle that this dark, silky smooth liquid leaves on your tongue as its ice-cold feel playfully burns down your throat, which is so wrong that it feels so right, is simply addictive. The experience of chugging a can of Coke gives and the sensation of tasting this devilish poison leaves us on a high, both literally and figuratively, especially after every good meal. It is no surprise that almost always every celebration is incomplete without this go-to drink. A feast is not quite right without that bottle of ice cold goodness.

Unfortunately, some people go to extremes when consuming this sinful beverage. I know people who actually use it as a substitute for water and drink it on a daily basis. What’s more dangerous is the fact that they do so despite knowing Coca-Cola’s harmful effects on the body.

In case you still haven’t made the change, this is reason enough to stop looking for that quick-fix-in-a-soda-can and prevent the addiction from controlling what you drink. As an alternative, I would like to propose a different “go-to cola” that provides the body with the right nutrients and enough energy that it needs. Let me introduce you to gotu kola.

Gotu Kola, or more commonly known as Centella, is a plant found primarily in the wetlands of Asia. It has been used in culinary preparations such as in soups, salads, or beverages, but it has been used mostly in herbal medicine since ancient India, Africa, and China. In today’s modern world, gotu kola is used as an active ingredient in gels, creams, capsule supplements, and ointments.

This unassuming herb with half-moon-shaped leaves contains a variety of health benefits. Because of the organic compounds, such as saponins, it contains, gotu kola is used as a topical treatment for the skin to speed up its healing process. Similarly, gotu kola improves the appearance of skin by reducing scars, wrinkles, and other blemishes.

Centella is also good for the gut. Its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties make it perfect for relieving severe stomach pains. It also makes for a mild diuretic which stimulate the release of excess toxins, salts, water, and fat, consequently easing the tension on the kidneys.

Gotu kola is healthy for the heart as well. First, it strengthens the walls of blood vessels and capillaries, which prevents blood leakage, optimizing circulation. Second, it increases oxygenation by stimulating blood flow. By relieving tension in the arteries and blood vessels, gotu kola regulates blood pressure and reduces strain on the cardiovascular system, keeping the heart healthy and free from atherosclerosis, heart attacks, and strokes.

Lastly, gotu kola is a much healthier booster compared to Coca-Cola. Because of its ability to improve circulation, more blood gets pumped into the brain, boosting cognitive function. In addition, its antioxidant properties help in eliminating plaque and free radicals in the brain; thus, preventing Alzheimer’s disease and dementia. Gotu kola, too, has positive effects on anxiety issues. Some research revealed how it decreases the frequency and severity of anxiety attacks and episodes in people suffering from General Anxiety Disorder. Centella even reduces stress and stimulates healthy sleep. Because it can calm the nervous system, gotu kola can help improve the quality of life of people suffering from epilepsy or premature ageing. And as far as “boosters” go, gotu kola is known to be an aphrodisiac. Aside from eliminating mental fatigue, this herb also increases libido, bringing the fire back to your relationship.

So the next time you find yourself looking for that bottle of Coke to cap off your celebration, think twice and remember how it actually crashes your system despite the temporary boost it provides. Instead of reaching for that “go-to cola,” try including in your diet gotu kola. It is definitely more nutritious, and its effects are more permanent. Unlike the boost that Coke gives and ends up crashing your system, gotu kola gives your system all the boost it needs to stay in top condition (and “on top” with your best performance). ;)
